The Sledging Debate

I’ve always felt that sledging has no place on a cricket ground, and the recent Gautam Gambhir-Shane Watson controversy has raised a number of issues. Gambhir has recently said that he does not regret elbowing Watson, since no one can put up with sustained abuse for weeks on end and not get affected. Which of course begs the question as to what should be “allowed” on a cricket field, and whether anything should be “allowed” in the first place.

The IPL debate

I’ve already talked about how the IPL is going to revolutionise the game of cricket based solely on the amount of money players like Dhoni and Symonds are making for just seven weeks of cricket. Now however, salaries of $1.5 million look to be a thing of the past, since IPL chairman Lalit Modi has announced that there will be no cap on the amount of money franchises can spend on their teams. Simply put, this means that the richest franchises will have the best players. To make matters better or… Continue

10 covers that people think are originals

‘Turn the Page’ – Metallica

In spite of this song being released on a covers album (but we’re in India – who buys albums here ?), people continue to think that this Bob Seger acoustic classic is a Metallica original.

‘Knockin on Heaven’s Door’ – Guns N Roses

Bob Dylan’s Knockin on Heaven’s Door is probably one of the most covered songs in history, covered by everyone from Pink Floyd and Clapton to Avril Lavigne.

‘Cocaine’ – Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton’s version of J.J. Cale’s classic anti (?)… Continue

Speed Racer Review

I religiously watched the Speed Racer cartoons as a kid, since it had a formula that was guaranteed to work with me – Lots of car racing, lots of fighting and a cool car that could perform a whole load of stunts! About ten years on, the Speed Racer movie delivers exactly that, albeit with a number of special effects that give the movie a virtual reality feel about it, making you wonder whether you’re actually watching a two dimensional movie!

Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer… Continue

Dhoni's golden touch

The Chennai Super Kings currently lead the IPL points table, having won every single one of their matches. They are led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and somehow I don't think its a coincidence that most teams this man leads seem to do well. The Chennai Super Kings' bowling attack for example consists of Jacob Oram, M.S. Goni, Albie Morkel, P Amarnath, and of course the "last over specialist" Joginder Sharma. Hardly the kind of bowling attack likely to strike fear into the opposition.

However, when… Continue

The reason for contacting you is to get your opinion about tobacco in India. The use of tobacco in India has been quite rampant, its going to kill over 1 million people by 2010 in India. So we have a chance to do something about it since the World Conference on Tobacco or Health is going to take place in Mumbai next month.

India Matters gives you the platform to speak your mind on this issue, whether it is for it or against, we want to know what the youth thinks about tobacco usage, policies, the ban, gutkha, children getting addicted to tobacco etc. I am doing this on behalf of Salaam Bombay, the NGO that fights for tobacco addiction in children.

Your opinion will be put forward to the policy makers during the event by Salaam Bombay, since they are the organisers of this event. It will be published on India Matters, Opinions with a link to your site or blog. You can have a look at some of the opinions posted as well.

Hoping to hear from you on this.
Regards
Bhavika
